Awards

In recognition of years of assistance and support by UK-based people for non-profits in southern and South Africa, the Network makes two or three awards each year. Recipients are either paid or volunteers. All awardees have proven over many years that they consistently go above and beyond in their efforts.

Awardees do not receive money – just our Award Certificate and sincere thanks.

Jenny Haley

Jenny has no formal connection with South Africa. Yet, she has produced the Network’s annual accounts for many years – entirely voluntarily. Jenny knows global philanthropy and the non-profit world well as she has been the administrator of the UK Fund for Charities since its inception in 2003. The majority of the Fund’s members are in South Africa and Jenny is instrumental in ensuring that their donations reach them smoothly. Her selfless support in undertaking the Network’s accounts provides both peace of mind to the trustees as well as ensuring independent arms-length oversight of the organisation’s finances.

Jeannette Kruger

Jeannette formed ZABRA in September 2015 as she was appalled to learn UK charity shops would not accept underwear, even top quality never- or barely used items. She took some bras to a South African organisation and was overwhelmed by the appreciation. To date, she has facilitated the sending of 250,000 items to 250 charities and projects in 30 countries, where women and girls are in need – in many cases, giving them their first bras. Jeannette continues to run ZABRA entirely voluntarily, covering laundry, storage and other expenses herself.

Derek and Janet Lubner

Derek and Janet – the Network’s first husband and wife awardees live their philanthropy daily. Derek has volunteered on the global board of mothers2mothers for 25 years and he and Janet are active in their UK fundraising efforts. They have also run his late parents’ foundation – MAID, supporting South African non-profits, for decades. Derek and Janet have also enabled the establishment of iZinga Assist to help South African non-profits attain top levels of verification to counter international donors’ hesitancy to fund the country’s organisations given the pervasiveness of corruption. iZinga Assist also upskills non-profit board members and trustees to ensure that their non-profits are optimally run, squeaky clean and delivering their services in the best way possible.
